I agree with the hot topics identified in the study. Bob Johansen in his book Leaders Make the Future points out skills that leaders need in the future and they map to these topics. A critical skill needed in the future is the ability to inspire people in a gripping way, the ancient tension between leading and watching yourself lead. He also points out that the ability to filter out noise and distraction is going to be even more important. As a baby boomer I find I have a particular challenge with this skill, especially when I look at the young “digital natives” who learned to use media at an early age and have better skills for “continuous partial attention.”

when I think of a mentor, the president of a company I worked for, I remember how thoughtful he always was, how he cared for people and brought so much life to the workplace. He included me in his family activities, I even crewed on his sailboat and went to his son’s Bar Mitzvah. He is one of the smartest people I know but I think about his caring and being a family man more than his smarts.

I have been thinking about turn signals lately, (really, no kidding). When I was recently in Denver I read about some stats that if you used your turn signal, even if you didn’t see anyone else, you could save lives, those guys on motorcycles may be in your blindspot. This metaphor of turn signals came alive for me because it can be quite serious if there is someone in our blind spot that we don’t consider. What do you think?

Cheryl, I agree that “life balance” is more accurate description and yes, it is a balancing act. Finding mastery of that balance is key.
